Why clearing leaves in the fall matters

A layer of leaves left over the winter packs into a wet mat under the snow. That mat holds moisture against the grass for months, and a wet layer sitting on grass all winter increases the chances of snow mould.

It also blocks the light in the first weeks of spring, and that is exactly when your grass needs it.

What we do

A fall cleanup is two visits, and both are included in the price.

First visit. While the leaf cover is still light, we mow the lawn and chop the leaves small enough to drop between the blades of grass. They break down over the winter and feed the soil. We also do a light clear of the beds and anywhere the mower cannot reach. That gets bagged.

Second visit. Once the trees are bare, we clear the whole property.

Doing it in two passes means the early leaves feed your lawn instead of going to the curb. There is also less left to bag at the end.

When to book it

Book once and we schedule both visits.

The first is timed to when the leaves start coming down. In Ottawa that is usually around the middle of October. It moves every year with the wind, the rain and how long the warm weather lasts. The second comes once the trees are bare.

We work back from the snow. That is normally some time around the end of November, and in a year it arrives early we start earlier.

If your trees drop everything at once. A mower can only chop what it can get through. A deep layer of maple or oak is more than a lawn can absorb. On those properties the first visit clears instead of mulching. We work that out when we quote. There is nothing for you to check.
